Enforcement Directorate Scores Over 92% Conviction Rate in PMLA Cases From 2020 to 2025
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) achieved a conviction rate of over 92 percent in money laundering cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) between January 2020 and July 2025, with convictions in 38 out of 41 cases decided on merits. During this period, the ED registered approximately 5,063 cases and secured confiscation orders for assets worth over Rs 15,600 crore, including Rs 55.14 crore linked to conviction cases. The PMLA requires the ED to base its cases on predicate offences registered by other agencies, causing trial delays due to dependency on primary investigations. Despite political criticism alleging bias and poor conviction rates, official data confirms a high success rate, although systemic and procedural challenges continue to affect timely trial completion.
