Domestic pulses production rises 47% and oilseeds 55% in past decade despite 56% edible oil import dependence
The government informed a parliamentary committee that domestic production of pulses and oilseeds has accelerated significantly over the past decade. Oilseeds production increased 55% between 2014-25 compared to 13% in the previous decade, while pulses production rose 47% versus 31% earlier. Despite improvements, the country imports 56% of edible oil demand, costing over Rs 80,000 crore annually. MPs expressed concerns about import dependence and health impacts of certain oils. The ministry outlined plans for self-reliance in pulses and oilseeds by 2030-31, while acknowledging challenges including rainfed cultivation on marginal lands by small farmers.
