India and the United States are progressing negotiations on a framework deal and a bilateral trade agreement focused on preferential market access and comparative tariff advantages. India is engaging with the USTR on Section 301 investigations concerning forced labour and excess industrial capacity. The forced-labour investigation has proposed an additional tariff on imports from India, but the measure remains unfinalised. Export-control sanctions prohibit routing electronic components to Iran through intermediaries, with conspiracy liability turning on knowledge and assistance.
US export-control sanctions prohibit the unlawful export of electronic components to Iran through intermediaries or front companies. The reported prosecution concerned allegations that an employee conspired with an Iranian business associate to obtain components for a Tehran-based company whose technology had potential military applications. Prosecutors relied on documents, text messages, photographs, and communications said to show knowledge and assistance, while the defence disputed procurement, the Swiss company's characterization as a front, and proof that components reached Iran. Evidence concerning a specific drone attack was limited to general evidence about the Iranian company and potential military applications.

Rupee weakness reflects geopolitical risk, crude prices, capital outflows, rising inflation, and widening trade pressures on India
The Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar amid heightened US-Iran tensions, elevated crude oil prices, a stronger dollar and foreign capital outflows. Pressure on the domestic currency was linked to concerns over India's import bill and risk aversion in global markets, while domestic market recovery and some moderation in crude prices limited the decline. Retail inflation rose above the central bank's four per cent target, and the merchandise trade deficit widened as imports, particularly crude-related imports, increased despite stronger exports.

Predicate-offence acquittal removes the foundation for money-laundering proceedings arising from alleged coal-block allocation irregularities
Money-laundering proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act depend on the existence of a scheduled offence and identifiable proceeds of crime. Although money laundering is an independent offence, its prosecution cannot survive when the predicate offence forming its foundation has ended in acquittal. The basis for treating property or transactions as proceeds of crime is then removed, making continuation of proceedings for money laundering and company-related liability under the PMLA legally unsustainable. Proceedings may be reopened if the acquittal is later set aside or materially varied.

PMLA bail requires satisfaction of twin statutory conditions amid allegations of impersonation, cheating, and suspected money laundering
The reported bail proceedings concerned the twin conditions under Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act: reasonable grounds to believe that the accused was not guilty and assurance that he would not commit an offence while on bail. The prosecution also raised concerns regarding possible evidence tampering, witness intimidation, and repetition of similar conduct. The accused relied on a serious heart ailment and constitutional protection against punitive pre-trial detention, while the reported order noted his medical stability in custody and that the investigation complaint had not yet been filed.

Frozen political party accounts raise questions on representative authority, Election Commission recognition, and preventing money laundering during investigation
Permission to operate three Trinamool Congress bank accounts frozen by the Enforcement Directorate was sought before the Calcutta High Court in connection with a probe into alleged dishonest financial dealings, unlawful collection of money, and routing of suspected funds through specified accounts. The Enforcement Directorate challenged the petition's maintainability, asserting that the filers lacked authority and had not disclosed an ex parte civil court order. The petitioners relied on the party constitution and the Election Commission's jurisdiction over recognition of political parties, while the Enforcement Directorate maintained that releasing the funds would undermine the prevention of money laundering.

Retail inflation rises above target as food and fuel pressures challenge monetary policy outlook ahead of August review
Retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index increased to 4.38 per cent in June from 3.93 per cent in May, exceeding the Reserve Bank's median target of 4 per cent. Food inflation rose to 5.32 per cent. The Reserve Bank's framework seeks to maintain CPI inflation at 4 per cent within a tolerance band of 2 per cent on either side. The Reserve Bank retained the benchmark policy rate at its June meeting but raised its inflation forecast for 2026-27, citing higher input costs and global energy price transmission to domestic fuel prices. Economic assessments anticipated further inflationary pressure while generally expecting the policy rate to remain unchanged at the forthcoming review.

Money laundering proceedings fail when acquittal in the scheduled offence removes the basis for alleging proceeds of crime.
Money laundering proceedings arising from the Bander coal block allocation were terminated because the underlying predicate offences had already ended in acquittal. The central legal point reported is that, while money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act is a distinct offence, its survival depends on the continued existence of the scheduled offence and proceeds of crime. Once acquittal in the scheduled offence removed that foundation, the complaint under Section 3 read with Section 70, punishable under Section 4, was dropped and dismissed.

Trade deficit expansion accompanies export growth as higher crude oil, electronics, machinery and gold imports outpace merchandise export gains.
June trade data shows export growth alongside a wider merchandise trade deficit because imports increased faster than exports. The higher import bill was driven mainly by crude oil, with electronics, machinery and gold also adding to import pressure. April to June figures reflect the same trend, with cumulative imports outpacing export growth and enlarging the merchandise trade gap. Export strength was reported in sectors such as electronics, iron ore, handicrafts, meat and dairy products, while services trade estimates for June indicate a surplus as services exports exceeded services imports.

Seoul, Jun 3 (AP) The winner of Tuesday's presidential election in South Korea will take office just a day later, forgoing the usual, two-month transition to serve a full, five-year term at a time when the country faces a deepening political divide and external challenges such as US tariffs and North Korea's expanding military partnership with Russia.

Surveys show liberal Lee Jae-myung maintaining a solid lead over his main conservative rival Kim Moon Soo. The snap election came about two months after President Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office over the conservative's short-lived imposition of martial law in December.

Here is a look at the main candidates: Lee pushed for Yoon's impeachment Lee, 60, the Democratic Party candidate, was the driving force behind an opposition-led campaign to oust Yoon, whose Dec 3 martial law decree plunged South Korea into turmoil.

Lee said he initially thought Yoon's late-night, televised martial law announcement was a digital deepfake when his wife told him of the news. After realizing it was real, Lee, then the party's chairman, ordered all his party lawmakers to rush to the National Assembly to vote down Yoon's decree. He then livestreamed his moves to the assembly, urging the public to gather there to protest Yoon's action.

Enough lawmakers ultimately managed to enter an assembly hall to overturn Yoon's decree, with troops sent by Yoon apparently mostly reluctant to use physical force to seal the assembly building. Lee later led an assembly vote to impeach Yoon before the Constitutional Court formally ousted him in early April.

“The rebellion was subdued, and Yoon Suk Yeol was dismissed. The long, severe winter has passed, and spring has come again. The people have finally made it,” Lee said in a book published in mid-April.

This is Lee's third run for presidency. In 2022, he lost the election to Yoon in the closet-ever margin recorded in South Korea's presidential elections.

Lee previously served as governor of South Korea's most populous Gyeonggi province and mayor of Seongnam city, near Seoul. He has portrayed himself as “an able captain” who can revitalize the economy, heal a worsened domestic division and bring back peace with North Korea.

“If you give me a chance to work as president, I will clearly prove how big change one official — the person in charge — can bring," Lee told a crowd in his first official campaign speech on May 12.

Once a political outsider, Lee rose sharply in politics from his position as mayor after fiery speeches critical of conservative President Park Geun-hye over a 2016-17 corruption scandal that went viral.

Supporting his popularity was his self-built success story: Poverty forced him to quit school and work as a child labourer at factories where he suffered injuries that left him with an arm disability. He later passed the country's highly exhaustive bar exam and became a human rights lawyer.

Lee has since tried to establish an image as someone who can fix deep-rooted inequality and corruption. But many conservative critics view him as a dangerous populist who intensifies divisions for political gains and backpedals on promises too easily.

With the assembly under his party's control, some experts worry Lee would have excessive, unchecked power. But others say Lee is unlikely to unilaterally pursue overly drastic policies because he cannot maintain a stable leadership without the support of moderates.

He faces five criminal trials for corruption and other charges, although the proceedings will likely end if he wins because a sitting South Korean president has immunity from most criminal prosecutions.

Kim was Yoon's labour minister Kim, 73, a hardline conservative who served as Yoon's labour minister, initially was considered past his political prime.

He suddenly emerged as a potential standard-bearer of the embattled South Korean conservatives after he solely defied a request by a Democratic Party lawmaker for all Cabinet members to stand and bow at the assembly in a gesture of apology over Yoon's decree.

Kim won the People Power Party's nomination in early May. He quickly faced an attempt by party leaders to replace him with Han Duck-soo, a former prime minister and independent who was more popular in polls. In a dramatic shift, Kim eventually retained his candidacy after party members voted in his favour.

In a televised party meeting afterward, Kim knelt, apologized for the infighting and vowed to promote internal unity.

“From today, we are one team. Let's fight together and win together,” he said.

Kim has said he would build a greater missile defense system and win a stronger US security commitment to cope with North Korea's evolving nuclear threats. He vowed to reform anti-business regulations and reduce corporate and inheritance taxes.

Kim was a prominent labour and pro-democracy activist in the 1970 and '80s, when South Korea was ruled by military-backed leaders. He was expelled from Seoul National University, the country's top school, worked at factories to promote labour rights and spent 2 1/2 years in prison for his anti-government activities.

Kim switched his ideology in 1994 and joined a conservative party, drawing rebukes from fellow activists who denounced him as a traitor. Kim has said he abandoned his dream to become "a revolutionist” after observing the collapses of communist states.

He served as Gyeonggi province governor for eight years and a member of the National Assembly for three terms. His political career suffered major setbacks when he successively lost parliamentary and Seoul mayoral elections to the liberals. He was named labour minister in 2024.

In a recent campaign appearance, Kim lauded late authoritarian President Park Chung-hee, father of Park Geun-hye, as a great leader who lifted the country out of poverty and apologized for his past fight against him. Park is a divisive figure because he engineered the country's past rapid economic rise but suppressed dissidents.

“When I was young, I opposed President Park Chung-hee. But now, I've realized I did something wrong,” Kim said. “I spat at his grave but now I offer flowers before it.” (AP) RD RD
