Separate corporate insolvency processes remain contested over foreign asset treatment, specialised resolution needs, and creditors' commercial decision-making.
Separate corporate insolvency resolution processes for VIL and VOVL are disputed following reversal of an earlier consolidation direction. Independent processes were preferred because the entities operate in distinct sectors and may require specialised resolution, while creditors' choice was treated as commercial wisdom not ordinarily open to tribunal interference. The dispute also concerns whether foreign oil and gas assets should be treated as VIL assets, against the background of VIL's conversion from co-obligor to corporate guarantor to ring-fence those assets from domestic business liabilities.

Revised Index of Core Industries adopts a new base year, adds iron ore, and revises sector measurement methodology.
The revised Index of Core Industries series adopts 2022-23 as its base year, replaces the former series and expands coverage to nine industries by including iron ore. Steel is measured using gross production data, while only raw coal is retained to avoid double counting. Weights are derived from the corresponding Index of Industrial Production series and normalised to 100. A geometric-mean linking methodology connects the former and revised series. June 2026 provisional estimates show overall year-on-year ICI growth, led principally by iron ore and electricity.

Banking and financial sector indices were the principal laggards. Renewed United States-Iran tensions, crude-oil concerns, global market weakness and reported foreign institutional investor equity sales added to investor caution. Broader domestic market indices nevertheless closed higher, with selected defensive and infrastructure-linked sectors recording gains.

Internal Ombudsman independence strengthens fair customer grievance resolution, prevents escalation, and drives institutional learning from recurring complaint patterns.
Internal Ombudsmen should independently review qualifying customer grievances to ensure fair, reasonable and timely internal resolution rather than mechanically affirming earlier decisions. Regulated entities should prevent eligible complaints from bypassing Internal Ombudsman review and should assess redress by the quality, transparency and fairness of outcomes, not merely complaint closure. Complaint patterns should be used for root cause analysis and institutional improvements, with Boards and senior management empowering Internal Ombudsmen and treating complaint trends as early-warning information. Technology may support analytics and faster processes but cannot replace judgment, empathy and impartiality.

Parental consent in APAAR enrolment requires a genuine opt-out option and compliance with personal data protection safeguards.
APAAR consent procedures were questioned because a scheme described as voluntary may effectively require Aadhaar enrolment and condition educational access on an academic identifier. The Orissa High Court direction required the model consent form to give parents an express option to refuse consent or opt out before enrolment. Concerns included informed parental consent, withdrawal of consent, long-term storage of children's educational records and privacy protections. Educational circulars remain subject to the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, and any data-processing framework must comply with applicable consent requirements.

New York, Mar 20 (PTI) An Indian student enrolled as a postdoctoral fellow in the US faces deportation after federal authorities said he was "spreading Hamas propaganda" and has "close connections to a "suspected terrorist", who is a senior advisor to the group.

Badar Khan Suri is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

A senior Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that Suri, a foreign exchange student at Georgetown University, was "actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media".

"Suri has close connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas. The Secretary of State issued a determination on March 15, 2025, that Suri’s activities and presence in the United States rendered him deportable.” A report in Politico said that Suri, who was studying and teaching on a student visa, has been “detained by federal immigration authorities amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on student activists whom the government accuses of opposing American foreign policy.” The report said that “masked agents” arrested Suri from outside his home in Virginia Monday night.

A petition filed by his lawyer Hassan Ahmad said that he was taken to a facility in Virginia and is “expected to be transferred soon to a detention centre in Texas.” Ahmad said in the petition that Suri is being punished “because of the Palestinian heritage of his wife — who is a US citizen — and because the government suspects that he and his wife oppose US foreign policy toward Israel.” The petition says the couple has “long been doxxed and smeared” on anonymously run, far-right websites due to their support for Palestinian rights. The petition adds that Suri’s wife Mapheze Saleh has been alleged to have “ties with Hamas” and once worked for Al Jazeera.

The Politico report cited a 2018 Indian newspaper article that said that Saleh’s father, Ahamed Yousef, was a former deputy foreign minister in the Hamas government in Gaza. In the newspaper article, Suri is quoted as saying “My father-in-law left the Hamas government after its five-year term ended and there were no fresh elections.” The incident comes less than a week after an Indian student at Columbia University, Ranjani Srinivasan, self-deported after her visa was revoked for allegedly “advocating for violence and terrorism” and involvement in activities supporting Hamas.

Srinivasan had entered the United States on an F-1 student visa as a doctoral student in Urban Planning at Columbia University, the Department of Homeland Security said. It added that Srinivasan was “involved in activities supporting” Hamas, a terrorist organization. The Department of State had revoked her visa on March 5. The Department of Homeland Security said it has obtained video footage of Srinivasan using the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App to self-deport on March 11.

The Politico report said that Suri’s lawyer has filed a lawsuit for his immediate release. “The agents identified themselves as being with the Department of Homeland Security and told him the government had revoked his visa,” the lawsuit says, according to the Politico report.

The report added that according to Suri’s petition, he was put in “deportation proceedings under the same rarely used provision of immigration law” that the government has invoked to try to deport Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University graduate and legal permanent resident, arrested for his role in leading campus protests at Columbia against Israel.

The petition further notes that Suri has no criminal record and has not been charged with a crime. Ahmad said he had not been able to contact Suri as of Wednesday evening.

"We’re trying to speak with him. That hasn’t happened yet,” Ahmad said. “This is just another example of our government abducting people the same way they abducted Khalil.” According to his profile on the website of Georgetown University, Suri completed his PhD in Peace & Conflict Studies from Nelson Mandela Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in 2020.

He wrote his thesis on "Transitional Democracy, Divided Societies and Prospects for Peace: A Study of State Building in Afghanistan and Iraq" in which he underlined the complexities involved in introducing democracy in ethnically diverse societies; as well as challenges to project state building.

He has travelled extensively in the conflict zones of India, Pakistan, Balochistan in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Kurdish Areas in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and its southern region, Egypt and Palestine.

He is an “interdisciplinary scholar whose areas of interest are religion, violence and peace; ethnic conflicts and peace processes in Middle East and South Asia. He is working on a project that looks into potential causes that hinder cooperation among religiously diverse societies and possibilities to overcome those hindrances,” the profile said.

The Politico report quoted a statement from a Georgetown spokesperson as saying that Suri is an "Indian national who was duly granted a visa to enter the United States to continue his doctoral research on peacebuilding in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We are not aware of him engaging in any illegal activity, and we have not received a reason for his detention. We support our community members’ rights to free and open inquiry, deliberation and debate, even if the underlying ideas may be difficult, controversial or objectionable. We expect the legal system to adjudicate this case fairly.” PTI YAS NSA ZH ZH
