Government Lowers Import Duties on Edible Oils and Extends Rice Duty Exemption to Curb Inflation.
The government has reduced import duties on various edible oils and extended the import duty exemption on milled rice to manage rising domestic prices and inflation. The duty on semi-milled or wholly milled rice is reduced from 70% to nil until March 31, 2009. Import duties on crude and refined palm, mustard, rapeseed, colza, canola, and sunflower oils have been significantly lowered. Additionally, the tariff values of crude palm oil and related products have been frozen at July 2006 prices to mitigate the impact of international price increases on domestic markets.
