Three Battery Giants Fined for Price-Fixing; Panasonic Gets Full Penalty Waiver, Lesser Penalties for Others Under CCI Rules.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) penalized three major Indian zinc-carbon dry cell battery manufacturers and their association for price-fixing. Eveready Industries, Indo National (Nippo), and Panasonic Energy, facilitated by the Association of Indian Dry Cell Manufacturers (AIDCM), were found guilty of anti-competitive practices. CCI invoked the Lesser Penalty Provisions, granting Panasonic a 100% penalty reduction, Eveready a 30% reduction, and Nippo a 20% reduction. The penalties were calculated based on profits from 2009-2017. The investigation revealed the cartel's activities dated back to 2008. AIDCM and individual officials also faced penalties.
