Indian Finance Ministry Launches Study on Unaccounted Wealth and Money Laundering with National Institutions' Aid.
The Indian Ministry of Finance has initiated a comprehensive study to estimate unaccounted income and wealth within and outside the country, engaging three leading national institutions: the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, the National Institute of Financial Management, and the National Council of Applied Economic Research. The study, which began in March 2011 and is expected to conclude in 18 months, aims to identify activities promoting money laundering and their impact on national security, assess sectors generating unaccounted money, and suggest measures for detection, prevention, and taxation of such funds. The issue of black money has gained significant public attention, with estimates ranging from USD 500 billion to USD 1,400 billion.
