RBI Guidelines: Banks Must Notify Customers of Fee Changes; Cash Deposit and Service Charge Policies Explained.
Banks typically do not charge customers for depositing money into their own accounts, but some impose fees for cash payments on credit card bills. According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks must notify customers of any rate or charge changes one month prior to implementation. Since 1999, banks have had the freedom to set service charges, ensuring they are reasonable and aligned with service costs. Currency chest banks can charge Rs.2 per packet of 100 pieces for cash deposits from non-currency chest branches. Banks must establish a transparent policy approved by their boards. This was stated by the Minister of State for Finance in a Rajya Sabha session.
