India Targets Unauthorized Foreign Accounts, Renegotiates DTAAs for Better Tax Info Exchange; Focus on India-Mauritius & Cayman Islands.
The Directorate of Enforcement in India is taking immediate action under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, against unauthorized foreign bank accounts held by Indian residents. India is renegotiating all Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) to enhance the exchange of banking information. Specifically, the India-Mauritius DTAC is under review to prevent treaty shopping and improve information exchange on tax matters, with a Joint Working Group established for this purpose. India is also pursuing a Tax Information Exchange Agreement with the Cayman Islands, preferring this over a DTAA. This was reported by the Minister of State for Finance in a parliamentary response.
