UTN number - Tds credit

Samit Banerjee

Dear Sir, Can you please advise if I submit IT return without quoting UTN for the asst yr 2009-10, whether IT dept will disallow the TDS credit? There is no announcement till date from the IT dept that when they will publish such UTN no. My clients are getting irritated for this delay.

UTN not compulsory for TDS credit; filing returns without UTN should not deny the taxpayer's TDS credit. A regulatory clarification indicates that the Unique Transaction Number (UTN) is not compulsory for claiming TDS credit; taxpayers may file income tax returns without quoting UTN and absence of UTN on the return should not automatically preclude recognition of the TDS credit, notwithstanding administrative delays in publishing UTN details.
