How to file IT returns for previous 5 years and claim refund

Murthy K

Hi friends,

My mother is a house wife, so we never felt the need to file income tax returns. We just filed a return on her name this year and during the process we randomly checked her Form 26 AS and realised that over the last 5 years there has been Tax Deducted against her PAN by Allahabad Bank. We then recalled that there was a joint FD on my father & mother's name over there for ₹ 10 lakhs , so the bank might have deducted TDS against that interest income. All put together there is TDS of ₹ 65,000 for last 5 years. Could you please advice how do we claim these refunds as my mother's income is less than minimum limit (even assuming a share from interest due to joint FDs). Please advice if we are allowed to file ITRs for previous years and if yes how do we do that. Appreciate your advice and help in this regards.

Thanks & Regards,

Murthy

Claiming Tax Refunds for Housewife's Joint Fixed Deposit: Challenges Post-2019 for Filing Past ITRs and Penalty Concerns A user inquired about claiming tax refunds for their mother, a housewife, who had tax deducted at source (TDS) on a joint fixed deposit with her husband over the past five years. The TDS amounted to 65,000, and they sought advice on filing income tax returns (ITRs) for previous years to claim refunds. A respondent advised filing Form 30 with the jurisdictional tax officer, but noted that the refund facility was discontinued from September 1, 2019, allowing only ITR filing for FY 18-19. Another participant questioned potential penalties for late filing for FY 18-19. (AI Summary)
