Indian Resident Queries HRA Exemption for Overseas Rent; Section 10(13A) May Apply, Debate Ensues Among Experts A resident of India working in the UK for two months during the fiscal year 2012-13 inquired whether rent paid abroad is eligible for House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption under Indian tax laws. The query was addressed by two individuals. One respondent suggested that Section 10(13A) of the Indian tax code does not differentiate between rent paid domestically or internationally. Another participant shared a similar experience and sought further clarification due to scrutiny by the tax department. (AI Summary)
