Reporting Financial Institutions use IRS FAQ 6 codes or FAQ 3 placeholders for U.S. TINs; amend Form 61B for 2020
Reporting Financial Institutions must report U.S. TINs for FATCA reportable accounts; if a TIN cannot be obtained they may use specified nine-digit codes set out in IRS FAQ 6 for defined scenarios (e.g., indicia types, dormancy, high-value passive NFFEs). If none of those codes apply, RFIs should populate the TIN field with nine 'A's or zero per IRS FAQ 3. Either entry will trigger an error message and a 120-day correction window; failure to supply the TIN within 120 days may lead to a U.S. determination of significant non-compliance. RFIs should apply this guidance and, if applicable, amend Form 61B filings for calendar year 2020.
