India Eases Car Import Rules: No License Needed for Specific Groups, Effective April 1, 2000.
The Director General of Foreign Trade has amended the policy for importing cars and automobiles, effective April 1, 2000. Importers such as individuals settling in India after two years abroad, resident Indians awarded cars internationally, legal heirs of deceased relatives abroad, and others like charitable institutions, foreign firms, and journalists can import vehicles without a license by paying full customs duty. Most categories can import one vehicle, with exceptions for companies and foreign branches, which can import up to three. A 'NO SALE' condition for two years applies, and foreign exchange remittance from India is not permitted for these imports.
