TRANSPORT RELATED EXEMPTIONS IN SERVICE TAX

Dr. Sanjiv Agarwal
Transport Services Exempt from Service Tax: Key Rules for Vehicles and Contract Carriages Explained Transport services exempt from Service Tax include hiring vehicles to state transport undertakings or goods transport agencies, provided the vehicle carries more than 12 passengers or is used for transporting goods. 'State transport undertaking' refers to services managed by government entities or corporations. Exempt passenger transport services include air travel to or from specific northeastern Indian states, contract carriages (excluding tourism-related services), and transport via ropeway, cable car, or tramway. Contract carriages must operate under a specific contract without picking up uncontracted passengers, and separate fares may exempt them from Service Tax unless used for tourism or similar purposes.
