<h1>Domestic Companies Must Pay Dividend Distribution Tax Per Direct Taxes Code Bill, 2009; Exemptions Apply for Subsidiaries</h1> Every domestic company is subject to a dividend distribution tax on declared dividends, as specified in the Direct Taxes Code Bill, 2009. This tax is calculated after reducing the amount by dividends received from subsidiaries, provided the subsidiary has already paid the tax and the company is not a subsidiary itself. Dividends paid to pass-thru entities are also deducted. The tax liability is settled through self-assessment or other prescribed methods, with credits for pre-paid taxes considered. A company is deemed a subsidiary if another company holds more than half of its equity share capital.
