of <h1>India Mandates Barcoding for Exports from December 2000 per Notification No. 32; Exemptions Available for Certain Items</h1> The Government of India, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has mandated bar coding on all exports effective from December 1, 2000, as per Notification No. 32 (RE-2000) 1997-2000. This requirement, under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, applies to finished and packaged items for retail sale, which must use international symbologies and numbering standards. Exemptions are available for non-finished, non-packaged items upon declaration to Customs. Specific export categories like garments, engineering products, food, pharmaceuticals, leather, sports, plastic goods, and handicrafts must also comply at the consignment level.
