India Amends Foreign Trade Policy: Prohibits Beef Imports, Requires Declarations for Edible Oils and Packaged Foods
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, issued a notification amending the Foreign Trade Policy for 1997-2002. Under this amendment, the import of beef and any products containing beef is prohibited. Additionally, all bulk consignments of edible oils and processed food products must include a declaration from the exporter stating that the shipment does not contain beef. Similarly, consumer-packaged edible products must have a label declaring the absence of beef. This measure is enacted in the public interest and is authorized by the Director General of Foreign Trade.
