Silver Imports by Indian Passengers Exempt from Excess Duty under Heading No. 98.03 with Conditions

The notification issued on February 8, 1993, exempts silver (excluding ornaments with stones or pearls) under Heading No. 98.03 from customs duty exceeding Rs. 500 per kilogram when imported as baggage by passengers of Indian origin or those with valid passports. The exemption applies if the passenger has been abroad for at least six months, pays the duty in convertible foreign currency, and the imported silver does not exceed 100 kilograms per passenger. Short visits under 30 days during this period are disregarded if the exemption was not previously used. This notification took effect on February 9, 1993.
