Appointment of DRI officers as Customs officers centralises enforcement roles and prescribes corresponding customs designations nationwide. The central government appoints officers of the Directorate General of Revenue Intelligence posted at Headquarters and zonal/regional units to be the Principal Commissioner/Commissioner of Customs, Additional/Joint Commissioners of Customs, and Deputy/Assistant Commissioners of Customs for the whole of India, under authority conferred by the Customs Act, with the date of effect to be notified in the Official Gazette; the notification supersedes a 1990 notification and records substitutions of designations effected by a 2014 notification.
