<h1>Gold Import Duty Exemption for Eligible Passengers: Customs Notification No. 171/94-Cus Limits Duty to Rs. 220/10g</h1> Notification No. 171/94-Cus, dated September 30, 1994, issued by the Central Government, exempts gold, including ornaments (excluding those studded with stones or pearls), from customs duty exceeding Rs. 220 per ten grams and additional duties under the Customs Tariff Act, 1975, when imported by eligible passengers. The duty must be paid in convertible foreign currency, with a limit of five kilograms per passenger. Gold must be carried by the passenger upon arrival or imported within fifteen days. The exemption also applies to gold from customs bonded warehouses, subject to certain conditions. Eligible passengers are those of Indian origin or holding a valid passport, returning after six months abroad. The notification is effective from November 1, 1994.
