Central Government Sets Specific Excise Duty Rates for Cigarettes; Filter and Non-Filter Types Taxed by Length
The Central Government, under the Central Excises and Salt Act, 1944, and the Additional Duties of Excise (Goods of Special Importance) Act, 1957, has set effective excise duty rates for cigarettes. The notification exempts certain cigarettes from excess excise duties, with specified rates based on cigarette type and length. Non-filter cigarettes up to 60mm are taxed at 100 rupees per thousand, while those between 60-70mm are taxed at 175 rupees. Filter cigarettes are taxed progressively from 225 rupees for lengths up to 70mm to 750 rupees for lengths up to 100mm. The duty is divided 65:35 between two excise acts.
