Voluntary digital hallmarking for silver jewellery from Sept 1, 2025 adds HUID, purity grades 958 and 999 for traceability
The government has introduced voluntary hallmarking for silver jewellery effective September 1, 2025, under a revised standard (IS 2112:2025) that implements a digital Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) system to enhance traceability and verify metal purity. Consumers can retrieve article type, purity grade, hallmark date, testing-centre details and jeweller registration via a mobile app. Two purity grades (958 and 999) were added, and the hallmark now comprises a standard mark denoting 'SILVER,' the purity grade and the HUID. Around 230 recognised testing centres operate across 87 districts; over 3.2 million silver articles were hallmarked in 2024-25.
