Government seeks stakeholder input before notifying 8th Central Pay Commission for 50 lakh employees and 65 lakh pensioners
The government has solicited inputs from key stakeholders including defense and home ministries, personnel training department, and state governments regarding establishment of the 8th Central Pay Commission. The Cabinet approved the commission's formation in January to revise salaries for approximately 50 lakh central government employees and allowances for 65 lakh pensioners. Despite six months passing since approval, the commission remains unnotified pending stakeholder consultations. The finance minister indicated that chairperson and members will be appointed following official notification. Implementation of revised pay scales awaits commission recommendations and government acceptance. Pay commissions typically convene every decade to adjust government employee remuneration. The 7th Pay Commission, constituted in February 2014, implemented recommendations from January 2016. The 8th commission is scheduled for implementation on January 1, 2026. Currently, dearness allowance adjustments occur bi-annually to offset inflation-related salary erosion for central government employees.
