ICAI Analyzes 2010-11 Tax Audit Data to Combat Fraud; Proposes Digital Signatures for Future Reports.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) successfully obtained tax audit data from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) for the financial year 2010-11. The data revealed that 16,16,096 tax audit returns were filed by 59,472 auditors. ICAI is processing this data to identify fake membership numbers and instances where auditors exceeded the allowed number of assignments. To prevent misuse, ICAI proposed mandatory digital signatures for future tax audit reports and suggested providing user IDs and passwords to auditors to monitor reports filed under their names. The CBDT is considering these measures to address malpractice concerns.
