Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel & Power in India (Base: 2004-05 = 100)Review for the week ended 6th August, 2011 (15 Shravana, 1933 Saka)

The WPI for the week ended 6^th August, 2011 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel & Power’ is given below:

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group declined by 0.9 percent to 197.5 (Provisional) from 199.3 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 11.64 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 06/08/2011 (over 07/08/2010) as compared to 12.22 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 30/07/2011).

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for 'Food Articles' group declined by 1.7 percent to 191.9 (Provisional) from 195.3 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of fruits & vegetables and fish-marine (5% each), fish-inland (4%), urad, bajra and arhar (2% each) and wheat and moong (1% each). However, the prices of ragi (5%), gram and maize (2% each) and jowar (1%) moved up.

The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 1.5 percent to 178.4 (Provisional) from 175.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of flowers, raw cotton and safflower (7% each), gingelly seed, cotton seed and linseed (2% each) and soyabean and castor seed (1% each). However, the prices of sunflower (4%), niger seed (3%), groundnut seed (2%) and gaur seed (1%) declined.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.9 percent to 167.2 (Provisional) from 165.7 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of furnace oil (7%), naphtha (5%), light diesel oil (4%), aviation turbine fuel (3%) and bitumen (2%).

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 13.13 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 06/08/2011 (over 07/08/2010) as compared to 12.19 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 30/08/2011).

Build up inflation over the week, financial year end and over the year is given in Annexure-I for some important items. Trend of rate of inflation during last six weeks is also given for some important items in Annexure II.

Wholesale price inflation trends show food articles easing while fuel and power prices firm, altering weekly WPI dynamics. The weekly WPI bulletin for 6 August 2011 reports provisional index levels, week over week percent changes and point to point annual inflation for Primary Articles (weight 20.12%) and Fuel & Power (weight 14.91%). Primary Articles fell weekly largely due to declines in food articles while Non Food Articles rose; Fuel & Power rose driven by petroleum and related products. Annexures provide item level indices, build up since end March and six week inflation trends for major commodities.
