Government Targets Tax Disparity: Salaried vs. Business Income; Plans Tech Boost Post-GST to Enhance Compliance.
Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia highlighted the disparity in tax contributions between salaried individuals and business people, noting that half of the 7 lakh companies filing tax returns report zero or negative income. The government aims to address this through advanced technology and increased tax compliance efforts post-GST and demonetization. For the assessment year 2016-17, salaried individuals paid an average tax of Rs. 76,306 each, compared to Rs. 25,753 by business taxpayers. Corporate tax rates are being gradually reduced, with a proposal to lower them to 25% for businesses with a turnover up to Rs. 250 crore. High-value deposit notices post-demonetization are under scrutiny, with tax revenue expected to rise.
