Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has stated that based on information provided by National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (NSE), 1641 companies are listed (equity shares) on NSE as on November 21, 2014.

These companies, in accordance with the provisions of Section 149 of the Companies Act, 2013 and Clause 49 of the Equity Listing Agreement, are required to appoint at least one woman director, on or before March 31, 2015.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri Jayant Sinha in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.

Women director requirement: listed companies must appoint at least one woman director under corporate law by the statutory deadline. 1641 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange must ensure the presence of at least one woman director on their boards pursuant to Section 149 of the Companies Act and Clause 49 of the Equity Listing Agreement, as identified by NSE data and communicated by the securities regulator; compliance is required by the statutory deadline for appointment under those provisions.
