Income Tax Department Updates PAN Card Rules: Aadhaar Now Valid for Identity and Address Proof, DOB Required.
The Income Tax Department has revised the rules for issuing Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards, requiring proof of date of birth in addition to proof of identity and address. A notification dated December 23, 2013, amended Rule 114 of the Income-tax Rules, 1962, to include Aadhaar as a valid document for identity and address proof. As of February 17, 2014, there are 20.24 crore PAN cardholders, with 9.73 lakh PANs linked to Aadhaar for uniqueness. The department aims to prevent bogus PAN cards by capturing Aadhaar numbers in applications. This update was provided by the Minister of State for Finance in a Lok Sabha session.
