Freight Payment Validity and Service Tax on GTA Services: Understanding Documentation Requirements and Compliance Challenges A user raised a query about the validity of a freight payment to a transporter shown in the balance sheet without supporting documents and the non-payment of service tax on Goods Transport Agency (GTA) services. A tax professional responded, stating that service tax payment requires documentation, but if a transporter challan is unavailable, a consignment note with specific details could suffice. The user acknowledged the advice but indicated a lack of any related documents and sought further guidance on handling the service tax payment. (AI Summary)

Payment of Service Tax is definetely based on certain documents.

However when there is no transporter challan, than the challan based on which the movement of goods has taken can also be considered as challan, provided the challan contains the particulars as Sr. No. , Name of the consignor/consignee, Registration No. of vehicle, place of origin, place of destination, persons liable for paying service tax and other particulars as per Rule 4B, then this document could be considered as the consignment note and service tax will be payable accordingly.
