Rectification of mistake: seek assessing officer correction when personal tax is paid to a wrong assessment year.
Misallocation of a personal income tax payment-as regular assessment for one assessment year instead of self-assessment for the subsequent year-constitutes a mistake eligible for correction by filing an application for rectification of mistake before the assessing officer to have the payment applied to the correct assessment period. (AI Summary)
Dear Sir, I have paid the Personal Income Tax for the Asst. year 2009-10 as tax on regular assessment instead of for the Asst. year 2010-11 as self assessment tax. Please advice how to rectify the same. Rajan

1. An application for rectification of mistake may be moved before the AO.
