GST on appearnce on Rajya sabha TV

TNarayanan Unni

sir/madam

One of our client who happens to be scientific adviser to various research institutes and is registered under GST, has been invited for a discussion on Rajya Sabha TV (RSTV) .

RSTV being a Public Broadcaster owned by Rajya Sabha, should my client charge GST on the fees received by him for his appearance on Rajya Sabha TV Channel as panelist speaker on a programme on a scientific topic.

Please advice

GST Applicable on Fees for Rajya Sabha TV Appearance Due to Commercial Nature of Broadcast Services A client, a scientific adviser registered under GST, was invited to speak on Rajya Sabha TV, a public broadcaster. The query was whether GST should be charged on the fees for this appearance. Respondents indicated that no GST exemption applies, as Rajya Sabha TV operates as a commercial entity similar to other TV channels. Despite the service being provided to a government entity, the nature of the transaction is commercial. Therefore, the client must collect and remit GST on the fees received for the appearance.
