GST on freight: dispute over the applicable rate when subcontractor vehicles issue GST and principal charges the same. A transport operator in coal transportation collects GST at an 18% rate while subcontractor vehicles also issue GST invoices at that rate, prompting a question whether GST must be charged. The operative issue is the applicable GST treatment and rate for freight supplied via subcontracted vehicle services and the discrepancy noted between the charged rate and commonly applied freight tax rates. Why 18%. GST on freight is 5% or 12%.
