Dealer Seeks Manufacturer Registration to Access Cenvat Credit; Conversion Confirmed Legal, Dual Registration Possible. A dealer registered under Central Excise inquires about converting to a manufacturer registration to avail Cenvat Credit, which is not accessible under dealer registration. The discussion highlights that both registrations serve different purposes, with manufacturers utilizing credit for excise duty on final products. One response confirms the legality of converting from dealer to manufacturer registration, advising to surrender the dealer registration and apply for manufacturer registration to avail Cenvat Credit. Alternatively, one can hold both registrations simultaneously. Further guidance from the Excise Division/Range office is recommended. (AI Summary)
