Quarterly Meetings Now Required for Write-Off Committees; Increased Write-Off Limit to Rs. 25 Lakh per Instruction No. 2/2010.
Instruction No. 2/2010 modifies previous guidelines on the periodicity of meetings for committees handling the write-off of irrecoverable income tax demands. Meetings are now required quarterly, instead of monthly, to review cases for write-off and those recommended for further processing. Reports of these meetings must be submitted quarterly to the Directorate of Income Tax (Recovery). The monetary ceiling for write-offs by the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax has been increased from Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh, subject to reporting to higher authorities. Write-offs do not waive the government's claim, which can be pursued for up to 30 years.
