STATUS OF REGISTERED COMPANIES AS ON 30.06.2021

Registered companies

Section 2(20) of the Companies Act, 2013 defines the term ‘company’ as a company incorporated under the Companies Act, 2013 of Companies Act, 1956.  The company can be classified upon various aspects.  The companies can be classified as below based on the liability-

• Companies limited by shares;
• Companies limited by guarantee;
• Unlimited companies.

Based on listing the companies can be classified as-

• Listed company;
• Unlisted company.

Based on the number of members the companies can be classified as-

• One Person Company (having only one Member);
• Private limited company (not less than 2 but not exceeding 200);
• Public limited company (Not less than 7 but no maximum is fixed).

Based on the control the companies can be classified as-

• Holding and subsidiary companies;
• Associate Companies.

Other companies include Nidhi Companies, foreign company, Government Company.

The above classifications are well known to readers.  It is normal that everyone wants to know how many companies are active, dormant, closed, under liquidation etc.  MCA released monthly information bulletin on corporate sector.  For the month of June 2021 MCA released monthly information bulletin on 09.07.2021.  This bulletin gives the information on the statistics of various companies registered under Companies Act, 2013.

Status of registered companies as on 30.06.2021

The total number of registered companies as on 30.06.2021 is 2187026.  The breakup of the said figure is as below-

Active companies

Out of active companies,-

• companies limited by shares as on 30.06.2021 are 1367496;
• companies limited by guarantee are 8563; and
•  companies unlimited liability are 307. 

Out of the companies limited by shares,

• 66372 were public (1508  Government companies and 64864 Non Government companies);
• 1262357 (Government companies – 618 and 1261739)  non Government companies)- were private including 38767 one person companies.

Among the public limited companies,

• Only 6750 (Government companies 79 and non Government companies – 6671) were listed. 
• The number of unlisted companies is 59622 (Government companies – 1429 and non Government Companies – 58193).

 The number of listed companies is very less when comparing to the total number of public companies.

Maharashtra State has the highest active companies (267536) and Sikkim has the lowest active companies (only 2 companies).

The sector wise active companies are as below-

From the above table it can be inferred that business service sector has more number of companies than other sectors.   Business Services comprise of Information Technology, Research & Development and other business activities such as law, audit & accounts and consultancy, etc. The manufacturing sector is having more authorized share capital than other sectors.

Closed companies

Out of the 762654 closed companies,

• 11077 companies were liquidated/dissolved;
• 703556 companies were declared defunct.
• 27430 companies were amalgamated/ merged with other companies;
• 15716 companies were converted to Limited Liability Partnership (LLP); and
• 4875 were converted to LLP and dissolved.

Status of OPC as on 30.06.2021

As on 30.06.2021 a total number of 38767 One Person Companies (OPCs) were registered under Companies Act.  The collective authorized capital is ₹ 1,260.92 crore.   During the month of June, 2021, a total of 826 OPC were registered with authorized capital of ₹ 29.77 crore.

The sector wise active companies are as below-

Economic activity wise classification of OPCs up to 30.06.2021 reveals that the highest number of OPCs were in Business Services (19610) followed by Manufacturing (4883), Community, Personal & Social Services (4856) and Trading (4547).

Status of LLPs

As on 30.06.2021, a total number of 211109 LLPs were active in the country. About 83.79% active LLPs (176887 in number) have obligation of contribution less than or equal to ₹ 5 lakhs each; and only about 3.14% (6619 in number) of LLPs have obligation of contribution above ₹ 1 crore each.

In LLPs also the business sector dominates its position that other sector with 75299 companies and having authorized capital 4018607.04 lakhs.

Status of foreign companies

As on 30.06.2021a total of 4162 foreign companies were registered in India.  Out of this 3323 are active.  During April to June, 2021, a total of 22 foreign companies were registered in India, 5 each in Maharashtra and Haryana followed by 4 in Tamil Nadu and 2 each in Delhi and Karnataka. Economic activity wise classification of foreign companies reveals that highest number of 11 was registered in Business Services followed by 3 in Finance and 2 each in Construction, Trading and Community, Personal & Social Services.

Trend in Registration

The year 2020 and 2021 witness COVID 19 situation all over the country.  Despite this situation there is an increase in registration of new companies.  Only in April 2020 the registration is less.  A total of 12722 companies were registered in June, 2021 as compared to 10954 in June 2020. An increase (16.55%) in registration of companies has been witnessed in June 2021 over the previous month. 

During the month of June 2021, a total of 12722 companies were registered with

collective authorized capital of ₹ 3,296.67 crore. Of them 12630 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with authorized capital of ₹ 3,296.27 crore.

Economic-activity wise classification of companies registered during June 2021

reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Business Services (3684) followed by  manufacturing (2621), Community, personal & Social Services (1942), Trading (1487) and Agriculture and Allied Activities (907).
