Compounding of offences: Chief Commissioner may accept prescribed compounding amount before or after prosecution. The amendment renumbers section 9A as sub section (1) and adds sub section (2) authorising the Chief Commissioner of Central Excise to compound any offence under this Chapter, either before or after institution of prosecution, on payment by the person accused to the Central Government of such prescribed compounding amount.
