<h1>Income Tax Act Section 80D: Increased Health Insurance Premium Deductions for Individuals and Families, Effective April 1, 2009.</h1> Section 80D of the Income-tax Act is revised to allow deductions for health insurance premiums paid by individuals or Hindu undivided families, effective April 1, 2009. Individuals can deduct up to INR 15,000 for premiums on their own or their family's health insurance and an additional INR 15,000 for their parents' insurance. For Hindu undivided families, the deduction is up to INR 15,000 for any family member's insurance. If the insured is a senior citizen, the deduction limit increases to INR 20,000. The insurance must be under a scheme by the General Insurance Corporation of India or an IRDA-approved insurer.
