Workplace lighting standards require adequate illumination, emergency lighting, and construction-site safeguards against glare, breakage, and cable failure.

Employer of every factory, mine, building or other construction work, industrial premise for manufacture of beedi and cigar, motor transport undertaking, dock work and plantation must ensure adequate natural or artificial lighting, or both, in all places where employees work, pass, or may have to pass in emergencies, including areas connected with amenities and utility services. Workplaces exposed to risk from failure of artificial lighting must have automatic emergency lighting with an independent energy source. In building or other construction work, additional requirements apply for suitable lighting, portable lighting where appropriate, reduced glare and shadows, guarded lamps, and strong portable lighting cables.
