42nd Amendment Act: Electoral Adjustments Effective Post-Presidential Date; No Seat Reallocation Until Post-2000 Census.
Article 82 of the Constitution was amended by the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976, to include additional provisos. These stipulate that any electoral readjustment will take effect from a date specified by the President. Until such readjustment occurs, elections can be based on existing territorial constituencies. Furthermore, until the publication of census figures from the first census post-2000, there is no requirement to readjust the allocation of seats in the House of the People or the division of states into constituencies. This amendment came into effect on January 3, 1977.
