of <h1>42nd Amendment (1976) updated the Preamble to emphasize socialism, secularism, and national integrity. Effective January 3, 1977.</h1> The 42nd Amendment to the Constitution, enacted in 1976, revised the Preamble by replacing 'SOVEREIGN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC' with 'SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC' and changing 'unity of the Nation' to 'unity and integrity of the Nation.' This amendment came into effect on January 3, 1977.
