Article 172 was amended to substitute "five years" for "six years" as the maximum duration of a State Legislative Assembly, with transitional provisions: assemblies whose period since first meeting exceeded four years and eight months are exempted and will dissolve on the earlier of four months from commencement or their original six-year term, while other assemblies are subject to the new five-year limit subject to Parliament's extension power. Special application adjusts timings for Sikkim's Assembly and defines "existing State Legislative Assembly" as one in existence on commencement.
