Non repatriable rupee deposit scheme: interest alone is repatriable while principal remains non repatriable with renewal and transfer rules. The Non Repatriable Rupee Deposit Scheme allows eligible persons resident outside India to open rupee deposits with authorised dealers using remitted funds or transfers from certain foreign currency accounts; banks determine interest rates and only accrued interest is repatriable while principal is non repatriable. Deposits may be renewed or transferred and reinvested interest loses repatriability. Accounts may be joint with residents and individual depositors may gift deposits to residents, non residents or recognised charitable trusts. Loans or overdrafts may be granted against these deposits for permitted purposes, nomination is allowed but payments to non resident nominees must remain in India, and transactions must be reported to the central bank.
