Foreign Privileged Persons must submit exemption claims and certificates for duty-free customs clearance under 1957 Rules.
The Foreign Privileged Persons (Regulation of Customs Privileges) Rules, 1957, specify the formalities for clearing goods free of duty. To claim duty exemption, a written claim and an exemption certificate in triplicate must be submitted at the time of clearance. The certificate must be signed by authorized diplomatic or consular officials, depending on whether the goods are for official or personal use. Two copies of the certificate are sent to the customs authority at the port of import, and one to the Ministry of External Affairs. Special provisions apply for motor vehicles, requiring specific forms and adherence to signature protocols.
