Duration of State Legislatures: Assembly term set at five years, with Parliament-authorised emergency extensions limited in time.

Every State Legislative Assembly continues for five years from the date appointed for its first meeting unless sooner dissolved, and Parliament may, while a Proclamation of Emergency is in operation, extend that period by law one year at a time, provided no extension continues beyond six months after the Proclamation has ceased; the Legislative Council is not subject to dissolution and as nearly as possible one-third of its members retire every second year under law.
